Prof. Besma Smida
I am the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies in Engineering and a Full Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Previously, I held faculty appointments at Purdue University Northwest and Harvard University. My research advances the frontiers of wireless communication, and I served as a Distinguished Lecturer for the IEEE Communications Society from 2021 to 2023. My contributions have been recognized internationally. I was featured by the IEEE Communications Society in their Women in Engineering in Communications series and named among the "100 Brilliant and Inspiring Women in 6G". I also received INSIGHT Into Diversity Magazine's 2015 "100 Inspiring Women in STEM" award. Additional honors include the Academic Gold Medal of the Governor General of Canada (2007), the NSF CAREER Award (2015), and the IEEE GLOBECOM Best Paper Award (2021).
